Fundación Instituto de Estudios de Ciencias de la Salud de Castilla y Leon (IECSCYL)

IBSAL (Institute of Biomedical Research of Salamanca) is a research centre that aims to improve translational research in medicine. The University Hospital of Salamanca is the nucleus of this Institute. It also includes research groups from the University Hospital, University of Salamanca and Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Superior Council for Scientific Research) (IBMCC, IBFG, INCYL, USAL, CSIC) and IECSCYL, which is in charge of the financial & administrative management. The Haematology Department of the University Hospital in Salamanca, Spain is a reference centre for MDS diagnosis and treatment as well as for other haematological neoplasms. Salamanca Haematology Department has made significant contributions, above all in the fields of multiple myeloma, hematopoietic cell transplantation and MDS. It is a Centre of Excellence of the International MDS Foundation.

Prof. Consuelo del Cañizo, MD

Consuelo is one of the founders of the Spanish Group on Myelodysplastic Syndromes (GESMD) and has access to the data of patients in this group. She coordinates several GESMD activities and participates in the majority of them. The GESMD has made relevant contributions to knowledge about MDS and has one of the largest series of patients. Specifically, Consuelo has coordinated several of the recent publications of the GESMD. The Haematology Department of Salamanca has also provided relevant contributions to the Spanish Group of cytogenetic in MDS, as well as to research in the MDS-BM microenvironment. Consuelo participated in developing the Spanish MDS guidelines as well as the ‘Recommendations from the European Leukaemia Net for diagnosis and treatment of MDS’. In MDS-RIGHT she will be involved in the integration of longitudinal patterns of health care interventions and incorporation of epigenetics in these patterns and she will contribute to the quantification of health care resources associated with MDS.

Dr. María Abaigar

María is a research fellow, with a background in the molecular characterization of MDS. She has just finished her PhD entitled "Molecular Characterization of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS): Analysis of genomic abnormalities in the development of MDS progression to Acute myeloblastic Leukemia and response to treatment with 5-Azacytidine”. Her research focuses on the application of genome-wide high-throughput techniques, such as genomic arrays, gene expression profiling and next-generation sequencing (NGS), in the study of MDS. She is a member or the Spanish Group on MDS (GESMD) and she has actively participated in the European projects: EuGESMA, IRON-II and NGS-PTL. In MDS-RIGHT she will be involved in the integration of molecular data of MDS patients.
